Can I help you?

I hope that the answer will be yes. The aim of these blog posts is to provide up-to-date, factual, evidence based information that will increase your knowledge and understanding of the subject of first aid. The blog articles will focus on the development of first aid trainers, how to… articles, reviews of training resources and first aid kit and equipment.

My name is Maxine and I am writing these blog posts as firstly I firmly believe in doing the best job that I can as a first aid trainer and secondly, sharing information with others so that they might do the same. My work involves delivering first aid training, from Emergency First Aid at Work through to Advanced Outdoor First Aid. With my partner’s business we offer First Aid cover for running events and also take people out in the Mountains teaching navigation and camping skills (I passed my Mountain Leader Assessment in 2018).

When I am not working I enjoy spending time outdoors with others or sometimes just on my own. My sons and I are attempting to walk all the 214 Wainwright peaks and with my daughters I will be walking the Hadrian’s Wall Trail next year to celebrate my 50th birthday. My walking and running adventures are covered in another blog, click here if you want a read.

So this blog is for you if you are a first aid trainer, an outdoor instructor or a forest school leader looking to improve your first aid knowledge. Maybe you are a parent and having to deal with cuts, grazes and nosebleeds on what seems like a daily basis. Or maybe you are simply someone who is interested in the subject of first aid and likes to learn. Whoever you are I hope that you find something of interest, let me know in the comments. Maybe there is a post you found particularly useful or perhaps there is something else you would like me to cover in future posts.

Like many sectors there is a lot of miss-information in the world of first aid. On many courses learners will say to me ‘On the last course the trainer said…’ and then tell me something that is out-of-date or just plain wrong. As first aid trainers it is very important to keep ourselves up-to-date and to ensure that we are following the current guidelines and advice.

This blog intends to act as a resource, to provide information on first aid in line with the current guidelines from the UK resus council and the EU resus council, along with information from other sources such as The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Maybe you are considering becoming a first aid trainer and are unsure where to start. This blog will aim to explain what you need to do to qualify as a trainer, how to deliver your own courses, what resources you need to buy and how to develop yourself to become the best trainer you can. It will answer questions such as what are the different kinds of Mannequins available? What type of AED training device do I need to buy? What resources do I need for delivering Paediatric First Aid courses? Blog posts will also explore current best practice, research and new understanding around first aid provision, common medical conditions, environmental factors and a whole host of other information that comes under the broad first aid umbrella.

Some posts will come from guest authors covering topics that are special to them.
